Thank you to the participants of the master class review, I hope it inspired you to bring performance tasks into your classrooms! This master class review was an opportunity to bridge Common Core and the arts in a tangible manner. The master class review provided an excellent opportunity to share the the real world experience of the common core assessments.
In addition, start to bridge the proverbial gap between the arts and standardized testing. The new common core assessments provide a unique characteristic in real world scenarios. We as educators, no matter the subject, are charged with preparing students for these scenarios for their futures. So, the performance tasks offer the chance to place students in real world situations. Additionally, to challenge them to synthesize information across subjects, and have them apply this information to real world situations they may encounter. Some of the questions that were posed at the master class review were:
What if there are different populations/classes?
As with any classroom differentiation is a necessity. If you have students that need a little more help when applying the performance task don’t hesitate to assist them in the comprehension of the stimuli. Provide students with a graphic organizers to assist the in the process.
Could the PRE assessment be the planning page? and the POST assessment could be the product?
How can this be included in the school SLOs?
Would a Visual Arts translation be an editorial cartoon? or a “comic strip” addressing the topic?
Both of these are great ideas for final tasks or products for the students to create. Don’t hold back on the possibilities of performance task products anything and everything can ideally become a product.

Typhani Harris is a dance educator and mentor teacher who has been on the boards of both the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (CAHPERD) and California Dance Education Association (CDEA). Recently, she has made a cross-country move and is now an instructional coach in Brooklyn, New York. Having begun as a high school English teacher, it has been her mission to bring theory and research into the traditional dance class, and in 2009 she won the Music Center’s Bravo award for excellence in Arts Education.
